Oil Prospecting
activities were carried out in Syria by foreign companies only
until 1958 when the legislation decree no . 167 was issued by
virtue of which the General commission for petroleum affairs
was established , the legislator granted the commission the
authority to carry out exploration and production activities
in addition to other tasks ( refining , transporting , and
purchasing of oil derivatives ) .
In 1964 the legislation decree no . 133 was issued , it
restricted the granted licenses for exploration and investment
to the government only .
In 1974 the legislation decree no . 9 was issued by virtue of
which the Syrian Petroleum Company
( S. p . c ) was established , more over other specialized
companies were established and linked to Ministry of Petroleum
and mineral resources .
As a result of the development of the legislation forms
related to the exploration and production activities the
legislation decree no . of 1975 was issued , it granted the
permission to the international oil companies to explore and
invest in the oil and gas sector according to production
sharing contracts between the Syrian government , SPC and the
contactors .
S.P.C occupies the most important economic position in
Syria; financially on the one hand, where its revenues are
more than 50% of the national income, and socially on the
other hand, as S.P.C manpower is about 16000 distributed among
its different directorates according to the organizational
structure Accommodation services and full medical care are
provided to all personnel and their families .
S.P.C is responsible for all activity
related to oil and gas industry including exploration
activities, oil and gas production as all exploration and
drilling works, reservoir, production, gathering and
development studies

Exploration works :
Since its establishment, S.P.C participated and supervised in
preparing and completing "The geological map of Syria" in
cooperation with the Soviet Union. S.P.C also executed gravity
and magnetic surveys over the whole area of Syria. Such works
assisted in directing the seismic surveys at different
densities according to levels of petroleum potentialities,
where such densities ranged between 0.3-2.5 K.M/sq. K.M the
following results were achieved through such works:
A: drawing the subsurface
geometry of the lithostratigraphic column thickness through
out the country .
B:
defining the structural feature of the crystalline basement.
C: Delineating the
boundaries of various tectonic units, and correlating results
with the geochemical, geological works and defining their
petroleum potentials .
D:
Establishing the Seismo- geological sections, which assisted
in clarifying the morphology of the different subsurface
structures, and under standing the geological development
history of Syria.
E:
Discovering a large number of leads and prospects..
F: Defining source,
reservoir and seal rocks, and their distribution through the
deferent tectonic units.
Also defining the
migration path of oil and gas from the source toward
Rocks in most tectonic
units.

Drilling Works:
A: S.P.C
executed exploration, production and development drilling in
all parts of Syria.
As commercial oil and gas
was discovered in Middle East and north east of the Syria,
drilling activities were concentrated in these regions.
B:
Exploratory drilling was carried out in 343 structures till
July 2003, out of which S.P.C had executed 192 structure,
while the rest were executed by
the service contracts companies, supervised by S.P.C.
C.Current
drilled structures constitute 39% of the total discovered
structures in Syria this fact induced S.P.C to open some
block for exploratory
works by international oil companies in order to accelerate
the work and to know Syria's potentialities as soon as
possible .
D.Number of
drilled wells in Syria is 2900(Appraisal, exploratory
and development wells).
E: The
existence of hydrocarbon accumulations, with in Paleozoic,
Triassic, cretaceous, paleogene and Neogene reservoirs which
are distributed at
different part of Syria, were proven.
F : Variability in the
distribution of the hydrocarbon bearing and producing
reservoirs is emphasized at the different basins, tectonic
units and fields such reservoirs are grading from two
collective horizons in the Palmayride area to eleven
collective horizons in the Euphrates depression.

Hydrocarbon
Production And Development:
Primary oil production in Syria
started in 1967 while the actual production started in 1968 ,
after the erect of the first pumping station in Tal Addas
north – east of Syria , where crude oil was pumped through
the pipeline to Tartous terminal across Homs refinery in may
1968 .
Oil Production reached 1.13
Million M3/year .
Oil production has increased as a
result of developing of the seismic survey and exploration
drilling to riach 11 Million M3/year in 1976 .
Later some service contract
companies started working in Syria and fulfilled commercial
discoveries the actual production reached 30 Million M3/year
in 2002 in addition some discovered gas fields were put into
production , and gas production reached 6 Billion M3/year
in 2002

Oil And Gas Transporting
:
Geographically oil and gas are
distributed among six acreages :
1.
The
Mesopotamian .
2.
south
Sinjar .
3.
Deir Ezzor
(The Euphrates).
4.
Middle
palmyride .
5.
North
palmyride .
6.
Aleppo plateau .
In order to facilitate the
transportation of oil and gas, SPC executed a number of
pipeline projects that linked the producing fields with the
main oil and gas transporting pipelines .

Manpower Training : Due to the expansion of S.P.C scope of work including
implementing of new technology , new directory was established
in 1992 , in order to train the different levels of S.P.C tech
, staff , the task of this directory was put in line with
grate technology development took place recently .
The national Trainees have to attend ( English language ,
Computer ) Training courses as well as internal and external
technical courses through contracts with specialized
institutes , in addition to the existing Training centers in
the oil fields for workers and technicians . |
